Ancient history school: what's new with the old?

virtual and 3D resources

virtual and 3D resources

Here in Australia, the academic year has begun and we seem to be back to normal in terms of managing space and social distancing. But I think it will be some time yet before we can go on excursions to a favourite museum or gallery so our students can see and handle artefacts and material culture.

Some of the world’s biggest and best museums have been busy in lockdown. They have created some fabulous virtual tours that we can use in the classroom. So now, my class can go to the Egyptian gallery at the Louvre Museum or the Roman gallery at the BM. While it is not the same as being in the presence of the wonderful objects themselves, it is as close as many of us will get for some time, and we are all so tech savvy now, a virtual tour is but a step away from a zoom meeting. So here are some quick links to virtual museum tours and 3D object based learning sites:

The Louvre Museum: Egyptian Gallery, Founding Myths

3D objects from the Louvre Museum

The British Museum: the Blog links you to some great virtual resources

3D objects from the British Museum

The Met Museum: project 360

The Penn Museum: Assyria and Mesopotamia

3D objects Penn Museum

Oriental Institute University of Chicago: Hellenic tour, Africa tour, Oriental Institute

I hope these are helpful as you return to the classroom.

Go forth and conquer!
