What's new from Pompeii?

Despite the incredibly overwhelming disruptions caused by Covid, the ancient city of Pompeii continued to astound the world with new discoveries. Every week or so, something pops up in my twitter feed and I am fascinated by a new object, or the ongoing work done by passionate archaeologists and restoration experts.

If you haven’t had a chance to catch up of what’s new, I thought I’d list a couple of things for you to read and browse through on your next coffee break. Many of us can’t get there at the moment, but it doesn’t mean we need to miss out.

The latest exciting find is that of a ceremonial chariot that was uncovered just outside the walls of the city. According to the current Director of the Pompeii Archaeological site, Massimo Osanna, this is the first chariot that was not created for purely functional purposes. For foodies, this might interest you - an intact Pompeii take away food joint! The discovery was made in an area that is not open to the public, and is known as a termopolium, Latin for hot drinks counter. The frescoes are stunning and it gives us another insight into the daily lives of the Pompeiians.

The discovery of two bodies in a villa outside of the city of Pompeii provide further information about the time of year of the eruption. The bodies of survivors, whether skeletons or casts, is a reminder of the human cost of the natural disaster. Watch the archaeologists at work as they uncover the remains.
